Why to mix a small sample before the whole bottle

By hilling · · 1 minute

Test a recipe change in a small glass before adding anything to the main bottle. It gives you a way back if the extra lemon, mint, or water does not improve the drink.

Pour out two tablespoons, add the smallest sensible amount of your new ingredient, and stir. Compare it with a plain sample. If the difference is hard to notice, try another small addition rather than assuming the whole bottle needs a large one.

Keep tasting utensils clean and do not return sampled liquid to the original container. Once you find a version you like, write down the ratio and scale from there. This is a simple way to experiment without turning the last good portion into another correction project.
