Can a ginger drink taste sweet without syrup?
By hilling · · 1 minute
A ginger drink can taste sweet when it contains fruit juice, even if no syrup has been added. Orange and other fruit ingredients bring their own flavor and sugars. “No syrup” is not the same statement as “no sugar.”
For buying decisions, use the Nutrition Facts rather than guessing from taste. The FDA distinguishes total sugars from added sugars; the two lines answer different questions.
At home, try adjusting the balance before reaching for a sweetener. A little more orange or a little less ginger may get you closer to the drink you want. Measure the change in a small glass first. If you do add syrup, make that a deliberate recipe choice rather than hiding it behind a wellness label.
