Total sugar and added sugar are not the same line

Total sugars and added sugars answer different questions on a Nutrition Facts label. The added-sugars amount is included within total sugars; it is not an extra number to add on top.
When comparing two drinks, first check that you are looking at equivalent serving sizes. Otherwise a smaller serving can make the numbers appear lower without telling you how the products compare ounce for ounce.
The FDA's label guide explains the distinction. Use the actual package for a specific product rather than estimating from its orange color or sweet taste. A drink with no added sweetener can still contain sugars from fruit. That is why a flavor description, an ingredient list, and a nutrition panel each have a different job.
